Cupboard / Wardrobe

This cupboard is a smaller version of the original at Winterthur made in 18th century white pine as a wardrobe with one shelf and blacksmith made dovetail hinges with a red milk paint wash finish. Pa. If it had ball feet it would be most certainly Ct. River Valley. 1985. Rutland County, Vt.

The hinges on this piece are called "dovetail" hinges. In the early 1980's I was visiting Plymouth Plantation and I got "schooled" on the proper term for this hinge. Watching the Blacksmith making these hinges I said to him "your making butterfly hinges" without missing a beat he said "My father taught me how to make these dovetail hinges", and that, was that. Butterfly, is still used commonly today.
