New York Slat Back Armchair, 1640-1700

This New York Slat-back armchair is a replica of the original at the Winterthur Museum, Del., made taller. The height of the back legs was increased 3", the radius to the curves on the top slat was restored, and the back and side stretchers have the same turned design as the front stretchers. Also, the loose ring turnings on the medial stretcher above the seat ( missing on the original ) have been added. The arm supports and seat stretchers are hickory, all other parts are maple. The chair is colored a light brown with a linseed oil and beeswax finish, and the splint seat has a two over two woven pattern colored the same. Note that O A means over all, not the stretcher length between the legs. 2016. New Caanan, Ct.
