Paring the shoulder

Paring the shoulder

Can't shave with it, can't cut with it! This particular chisel with its weight works perfectly for this purpose. I'll pare almost to the end and then pare back in the opposite direction so as not to tear out the corner, then I'll plane the end grain with just my 1 7/8" rabbit plane to finish. You must take care to plane exactly to the mitered corners and feather the edge evenly across to 1/16"- 3/32" thick. I've worked on many 18th century panels for restoration projects across New England and have never seen one that wasn't perfectly even across, or that wouldn't have passed the 'Masters' okay. Pride in their work ! >
