William & Mary Easy Chair

William & Mary Easy Chair

A William & Mary easy chair with Spanish feet, ca 1730, in black milk paint, measured from one in a private collection, the feet, however, were taken from an example at the Winterthur Museum. The primary wood of the majority of these chairs was maple painted black. A rare few are made of walnut. I've made fourteen of these, not all the same - the stretchers, legs and aprons vary on the originals which coincides with their short lived " in style" building history. 1989, and after. This one in Durham, Ct.
These were the first style of the " Easy Chair" or also known as a "Wing" chairs today, in the Colonies, and of course preceded by English prototypes.
