I restored and re-profiled the sole of this plane to match the ubiquitous window muntins of the 18th century in the colonies that was the standard up to the Federal Period, then the profile changed: The muntins must be sized to exactly 1" in width. Sash planes form half the profile at a time, plane that side, turn the board over and plane the other half, then you can rip it to 1" or 1 1/8" in depth, depending if it's interior or exterior. Now, you cut it to the exact length, cut and fit the tenon and cope carefully and exactly to match the profile of the receiving muntin, then your done, almost. Multiply four tenons, mortises and copes per pane x 23 panes that must be fitted accurately for this one arched door! Think of the multi-millions of board feet that have been sawed, planed, moulded, fitted and pinned by hand in the whole of the colonies ! Staggering ! And, the quantity of $$ lbs. that planemakers made on just this one plane. And it all began around 1720. It became a wildfire, an explosion of technology and industry, and of this beautiful architectural detail that we take for granted, that has enhanced all of our houses and buildings all over the world since !!!!! Its not fancy or sexy, but it is Great Stuff ! Everything has a First !
